I'm Tony. I'm not a trainer, and I'm not going to pretend to be one. What I can do is tell you how to start so you don't do what most people do: go too hard, get sore or hurt, miss a week, and decide you're "not a gym person."

First, a safety check

If any of these are true, talk to your doctor before you start:

  • You have a heart condition, high blood pressure or diabetes.
  • You have joint, back or other injuries that act up.
  • You're pregnant.
  • You get chest pain, dizziness or shortness of breath when you're active.

That's not a reason to skip it. It's how you start the right way.

Write down one reason

"Lose weight" is fine. "Keep up with my kids," "stop my back hurting," or "feel strong again" are better, because they're what gets you out the door on a rainy Tuesday. Write yours on the weekly plan printout.

Measure where you are

Pick one or two things to track:

  • Your weight, once a week, same day, same time.
  • Your waist measurement.
  • How far you can walk in 20 minutes.
  • How many sit-to-stands from a chair you can do in 30 seconds.

You're not grading yourself. You're giving yourself something to beat.
